A couple’s first dance is one of the highlights of their wedding. And the song that they dance to should be chosen with some care and consideration. There are plenty of love songs out there but when you listen to the words, they are actually singing about breakups and loss! What kind of a wedding song is that?
For example, about 15 years ago, the movie “Titanic” came out as did Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. This song was probably played at every wedding that year. Now granted it is a love song and it’s about a great love…. But the hero dies, people! Really? Isn’t a wedding supposed to be a HAPPY celebration of two people making a lifelong commitment to each other and hopefully living together into a ripe old age?
So with that in mind I have a list of some wedding songs for your consideration. Many of them are true classics by such greats as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke. Others are more contemporary. And I’m not saying that the lyrics are all perfectly about a wedding, some do speak of relationship challenges and such but ultimately there is a positivity about the song…. Which is what makes it suitable for a first dance selection.
Also they are all pretty much suited to the “couple shuffle” meaning that if you don’t want to take dance lessons and have something all choreographed for you, and you just want to sway back and forth… hey! No harm in that! This is not “Dancing With the Stars”! Why add extra pressure to yourselves? In fact, I can’t tell you how many weddings I’ve been to where the couple had something choreographed for them and you could see them counting steps and trying so hard to “get it right” that it lost all meaning, all emotion. I would much rather see the couple staring into each other’s eyes and doing the gentle sway, maybe throwing in a kiss for good measure and actually looking like they are in love.
Anyway, I hope you find something that you like in here!
